Time Capsule

Gillian Cubbage

Saturday, July 18, 2015

A time capsule is meant to take a picture of the current times and send it to the future.  The International Time Capsule Society estimates there are between 10,000 and 15,000 time capsules worldwide.

In commemoration of our 50th Anniversary, we are gathering items to be put into a time capsule to be opened in 2065.  It will be sealed sometime in September and kept in the museum.  In the meantime, the artifacts are on display.

To date, we have collected letters from many Wellington students.  The middle and high school students wrote letters to their older selves.  The elementary-aged kids made lists of their favorite things; some included pictures or drawings.

In addition, we have acquired a 2015 Wheat Festival button and program, a Wellington Heat schedule, a Great Race program, a Cub Scout Trails map, a Sumner County Visitor’s Guide, and a 2015-2016 Wellington phone book.

Our plans include interviews with several members of the community about what they believe Wellington will be like in 50 years.  We hope to video record these interviews and save them to a USB flash drive.  We will also transcribe them and store them in written form as well in case USB format cannot be accessed in the future.
